CLINICAL EFFECTS OF WATER SOLUBLE VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTATION IN GERIATRIC PATIENTS

S. M. DYMOCK and J. C. BROCKLEHURST

University of Manchester

Dietary supplementation with individual B group vitamins, ascorbic acid, Becoaym forte or a placebo was given to 126 old people in long-stay geriatric accommodation. Serial records of the physical signs associated with malnutrition were made. Riboflavine therapy was associated with an improvement in chcilosis and nicotinamide with improvement in the appearance of the dorsum of the tongue, but neither of these findings achieved statistical significance. No improvement was seen in other findings in the tongue and mouth, nor on purpura or capillary fragility. It is suggested that further investigation of the effect of supplementation with riboflavine and nicotinamide in long-stay hospital patients is needed.
