Quality of life in nursing-home residents: an intervention study of the effect of mental stimulation through an audiovisual programme

OBJECTIVE:: to create a model for improving the quality of life of nursing-home residents.
DESIGN:: a controlled randomized study.
SETTING:: a suburban nursing home in Stockholm.
INTERVENTION:: mental stimulation by audiovisual means.
SUBJECTS:: residents with mild mental impairment who had lived in the nursing home for at least 6 months.
OUTCOME MEASURES:: quality of life was measured by the Nottingham Health Profile.
RESULTS:: the quality of life increased in the intervention groups compared with die control group.
CONCLUSION:: audiovisual stimulation had a great impact on the quality of life of chronically ill elderly nursing-home residents.
